Spring is here!

So the one thing that is associated with college is Spring Break.  What kind of words come to mind when you think spring break?  Relaxation. Parties.  Friends.  Mexico?  That last word, Mexico, passed through my mind several times while thinking of a place to spend my time off.  What I really wanted to do was go to Alcopolco, but it seems my plans have changed.  Since I am not in a fraternity, I don't have a large group of people to go with from SMU so I was thinking about re-uniting with all my friends from back home, but most of them have decided to just go back to Sacramento.  Boring was my thought.  I've got to go somewhere and relax for a while.
I was talking to my roommate and he said that most of the "pledges" in his fraternity are going to go to South Padre, Texas.  He told me that it was a dirty place, but is actually where Spring Break originated.  I told him that I would definitely go.  it seems like it will be a good experience to go somewhere I've never been and might never get to experience again.  But isn't it near the border?  I'm pretty sure that it is just a quick walk into Mexico, where all the trouble seems to originate.  I looked up things about South Padre and found interesting information about college kids being kidnapped in Mexico during spring break.  I guess I won't cross the border!
Are there any better places to go in Texas?

Second semester the one thing that people think of is SPRING BREAK. Even when I was in high school, I would think of where I was going to go for spring break. I'm also going some where were I have never been before also but I am going to Mexico. I'm going with a bunch of my pledge sisters' to Puerto Vallarta. I am really excited because I will be with all my friends and because I have never been there before. The one thing that I am thinking though is that we all have to stay together because where we are going at night can be unsafe. That is the one thing I am sort of worried about. But other than that I am really excited!! But I dont know any other places in Texas to go to cause the only place in Texas I have been is Dallas!

I haven't been to South Padre, but I've never heard of it called "dirty" (except maybe the water). It's a popular vacation spot for Houstonians though so I don't see why it wouldn’t be safe. But then what would you do in South Padre? If you like partying it looks like the place to be, but otherwise why go to an island this early in the year?

But other places to go -
One place that came to mind was San Antonio. If you're going to live in Texas this is one place to visit. The River walk is a great area to explore and shop. You can visit the Alamo and learn about Texas history. Six Flags Fiesta Texas and SeaWorld are both open all Spring Break week. There’s also many caves, zoos, and museums to visit between it and New Braunfels.

There's also Corpus Christi, which is not quite as far south as South Padre. I'm not sure if anything special would be going on for Spring Break, but its a nice relaxed coastal city. When I've gone there for Spring break I typically spend my time shopping in the city and in Rockport, hiking in Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, and visiting the Texas State Aquarium.

Personally though, I am going home to Houston. The Livestock Show & Rodeo is open there but not much else.

I have gone to Mexico for Spring Break and Summer every year. This year I happen to be going to Acapulco! (I am super excited!!!!) Hearing people talk about how dangerous Mexico is kind of making me laugh. First of all, most of the crime is on the boarder. What college kids would go there for break? And second of all, the other problem people are having is driving on the altopistas (toll roads). But honestly, how many SMU kids are going to drive themselves?
But if you cannot go to Mexico and just want to stay in Texas, I recommend South Padre or Port Aransas for the beach. Or if you are just looking for a place to go and not the beach go to San Antonio!

I suggest you not cross the border if you go to South Padre. But the whole reason for Spring Break at Padre was that you could walk over to Mexico and drink legally, right? But I don't think that would be safe now.

By the way, Shuichon's suggestion was good. San Antonio is beautiful, historical, and has tasty food. I'd go there.
